How do we maintain our well-being in what has been described as a “dumpster fire” of a year? Most people in a recent poll characterized their mental states as uncontrollable anxiety. This spills over into an unwelcome surge in pessimism and fears about personal futures as well as the future of our country, and the planet as a whole. As long ago as the Gilded Age, the human brain has been known to weigh in on and even control many physical and emotional responses to external stimuli. It was dubbed The Enchanted Loom, spinning a great tapestry made up of our experience of this human life.
Neuroscientists have been mapping human responses to external circumstances since fMRI and PET scans. We have scientific evidence to corroborate what mystics, philosophers, and spiritual activists have long known: we can decide to control our internal states. We do not have to be victims of circumstances no matter how disturbing.
